One of those books I that made me grateful to the friend (Kenny) who recommended it. This one is equally about “coming of age”, poverty and growing up in an African-American/Black ghetto in New York (Harlem). Book laced with profanities and violence but poetic all the same.
Young, black and poor in America
That about sums up the backdrop of the book. But it is about the one that made all the mistakes but stopped at the brink of criminal record. It is about heart break and also an armor against heart break.
Other books/movies that comes to mind
The two other books on African lives that I have liked are Roots (of course) and Biko. I rate Manchild.. along with these and is my personal favorite. A movie that comes to mind is “An officer and a gentleman”. Similar coming of age transformation.
